Hotel pickup, the forest by truck, the lake by boat, a walk in the trees, and back in the city about five hours later.

The van collects you from your Panama City hotel; the exact pickup time comes by email the day before, and pickups can start up to an hour before the tour time. Gamboa is about 45 minutes away.
Sloths from the Safari Truck
An open safari truck drives the roads at the edge of Soberania National Park while the guide scans the trees for sloths, toucans, iguanas and crocodiles, with binoculars and a spotting scope to share.
Gatun Lake by Boat
A boat runs down the Chagres River onto Gatun Lake, where ships cross the canal, to the islands of white-faced capuchins, Geoffroy's tamarins and mantled howler monkeys. You watch from the boat.
A Rainforest Walk, Then Back
A short guided walk in Soberania National Park and a stop at the operator's rainforest cafe, then the drive back. A $20 park and lake fee is not in the ticket price: it is paid to the guide on the day.

THE LAKE FOR LESSGatun Lake Monkey and Wildlife Boat from Panama City
Almiza tour by My friend Mario's four hours from Panama City hotels: the drive to Gamboa Marina and a riverboat across Gatun Lake, looking for white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys and Geoffroy's tamarins, and, on a lucky day, sloths in the treetops, tropical birds and crocodiles on the shore. A boat fee is paid at pickup.
LONGER ON THE WATERGatun Lake Wildlife Boat Tour
Jhaline Tours Panamá's three-to-four-hour trip from Panama City: a boat across Gatun Lake along the rainforest shore, looking for howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, tamarins, tropical birds, turtles, iguanas and sometimes crocodiles, with ships passing on the canal. A private boat is offered as a second option.
BOAT AND PIPELINE ROADMonkey and Sloth Boat Trip with a Pipeline Road Walk

SLOTHS IN THE CITYAncon Hill Wildlife Walk in Panama City
Conozca Panamá Primero Tours & Transfers' three-hour walk on Ancon Hill, a protected reserve in the middle of Panama City: two- and three-toed sloths, Geoffroy's tamarins, toucans and motmots through a spotting scope, and views over the canal's Pacific entrance from the top. TREETOPS AND SLOTHSGamboa Aerial Tram, Observation Tower and Sloth Sanctuary

The Guide
The Canal's Wildlife, and the Tour That Finds the Most of It
Which animals live along the canal, how often the tours actually see them, what you pay with the fee on the day, and when to go.
The Panama Canal runs through rainforest. Between Panama City and the Caribbean the ships cross Gatun Lake, a reservoir made by damming the Chagres River, and the forest of Soberania National Park comes down to the water on the east bank. So a half day out of the capital can take in a whole rainforest cast: sloths in the trees by the road, crocodiles and caimans on the banks, toucans overhead, and three kinds of monkey on the small islands of the lake. A Panama Canal wildlife tour strings those places together, usually from Gamboa, the canal town where the Chagres meets the lake, about 45 minutes’ drive from Panama City.
The short answer
For one tour, take Monkey Sightseeing Panama’s wildlife tour, sold on GetYourGuide as Panama Canal: The Most Complete Wildlife Experience. In five hours from your Panama City hotel it does all three habitats: an open safari truck along the roads of Soberania looking for sloths, toucans, iguanas and crocodiles; a boat down the Chagres onto Gatun Lake, past ships in the canal, to the monkey islands; and a short guided walk in the forest. Binoculars, a spotting scope and a raincoat are lent. It costs from $60 a person, with 2,230 reviews (checked October 2026), and a $20 park and lake fee is paid to the guide on the day, on top of the ticket (checked October 2026).
Check dates for the wildlife tour
It does not go into the canal locks, it is not for people with limited mobility, and no animals may come along, assistance animals included.

The animals, and how often the tours see them
Nothing on these trips is a zoo: every animal is wild, and each one is a matter of luck and season. The fairest guide to the odds is what people write after the tour. Of the 218 written reviews among the newest 350 of the wildlife tour (posted between late July and the end of October 2026), 72 mention monkeys, 40 mention sloths, 14 crocodiles and 10 toucans. Reviews name what struck people, not everything they saw, so read the counts as a ranking rather than odds: monkeys first, sloths next, crocodiles and toucans well behind.
| Animal | Where it lives along the canal | On the wildlife tour |
|---|---|---|
| White-faced capuchin, mantled howler, Geoffroy’s tamarin | The small islands of Gatun Lake; howlers also in Soberania’s forest | The boat stops at the islands |
| Two-toed and three-toed sloths | Trees along the roads of Soberania and Gamboa, Ancon Hill in the city | The safari truck looks for them first |
| American crocodile and spectacled caiman | The banks of the lake and the Chagres River | Seen from the boat or the truck on some trips |
| Toucans and aracaris | The forest canopy, Pipeline Road above all | Seen on some trips; a birding day on Pipeline Road is the surer way |
| Green iguana, turtles, agoutis, coatis | Riverbanks, logs, forest edges | Often along the way |
The Panama Canal animals guide goes through them one by one, with names to look for and what each one does in the heat of the day.
Where the wildlife is

| Place | What lives there | Trip for it |
|---|---|---|
| Soberania National Park | Rainforest from the canal’s east bank to Gamboa: sloths, howlers, coatis, agoutis, toucans, trogons | The wildlife tour's safari truck and walk |
| Pipeline Road | A dirt road into Soberania’s forest, open on foot only, one of the great birding roads of the Americas | A birding day with a guide |
| Gamboa and Gatun Lake | The canal town, its docks, and the lake with the monkey islands | A wildlife boat on the lake |
| Barro Colorado Island | The lake’s largest island, a Smithsonian research station since 1923 | Not on these tours; day visits are booked with the Smithsonian |
| Ancon Hill | A forested nature reserve in the middle of Panama City, 199 m high | An early walk for sloths and toucans |
| Metropolitan Natural Park | A protected forest of about 232 hectares inside the city | On your own, from 7:00 am |
| Miraflores Locks | The canal’s Pacific locks and visitor center | A locks tour, not a wildlife tour |

So the wildlife tour comes to about $80 a person once its fee is paid (checked October 2026). The cheapest way onto the lake is Almiza tour by My friend Mario’s boat from Gamboa Marina, from $30 on Viator (checked October 2026), with a boat fee paid on the day. Panama uses the US dollar, so there is nothing to change.
When to go
The tours run all year, in rain or sun. The dry season runs from about mid-December to the end of April: on Barro Colorado Island, in the middle of Gatun Lake, the Smithsonian’s rain gauge averages 32 mm in February against 426 mm in November, the wettest month. Birders have a second season of their own: from 1 October to 18 November each year, the Panama Audubon Society counts migrating hawks and vultures passing over Panama City from the top of Ancon Hill; its estimate for 2018 was 2.9 million birds. The best time guide has the year month by month.
Who should pick something else
- You came to see ships in the locks: the wildlife tour stays on the lake. The wildlife tour or locks tour guide sets the two side by side.
- A sloth is the whole point: wild sloths are likely, never certain; where to see sloths in Panama covers Ancon Hill, the city park and the sanctuaries where a sloth is a sure thing.
- You want crocodiles: see crocodiles in the Panama Canal for where they are, the caimans, and why nobody swims in the lake.
- You are a birder: half a day on Pipeline Road with a bird guide beats any boat.
- You want the forest the scientists study: Barro Colorado Island takes visitors on guided day visits from the Smithsonian’s dock in Gamboa, booked with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute at $125 for a foreign adult, never on a Monday or a Friday, and only from age 12 (checked October 2026).

Panama Canal Wildlife Tour: Questions
Price and the fee on the day, which animals, sloths, crocodiles, the locks, Barro Colorado and the season.
From $60 a person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), plus a $20 park and lake fee paid to the guide on the day. That makes about $80 a person in all (checked October 2026). Hotel pickup in Panama City, the safari truck, the boat, binoculars, a spotting scope and a raincoat are in the price; tips are not.
Monkeys most often, then sloths, with crocodiles, caimans, toucans and iguanas on some trips. Of 218 written reviews among the newest 350 of the wildlife tour (late July to October 2026), 72 mention monkeys, 40 sloths, 14 crocodiles and 10 toucans. Every animal is wild, so nothing is guaranteed. The animals guide covers each one.
No. The boat runs on the Chagres River and Gatun Lake, where you see ships crossing the canal, but it does not enter or visit a lock. For a ship in a lock chamber, see the wildlife tour or locks tour guide.
Often, never for certain. The wildlife tour's safari truck looks for sloths in the trees along the roads of Soberania National Park, and 40 of its 218 newest written reviews mention one. For a sure sloth, the tours to Gamboa's sloth sanctuary show rescued animals. See where to see sloths in Panama.
Yes: American crocodiles and spectacled caimans live in Gatun Lake and the rivers that feed it. The American crocodile is protected under Panama's wildlife law (Ley 24 de 1995), and feeding or provoking crocodiles is banned. You watch them from the boat; nobody swims. See crocodiles in the Panama Canal.
The dry season, from about mid-December to the end of April, for the fewest rained-out mornings. February is the driest month on Gatun Lake and November the wettest. Birders also come from 1 October to 18 November, when migrating hawks and vultures pass over Panama City. See the best time guide.
Yes, on a guided day visit booked with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, not on a tour. Visits leave the Smithsonian's dock in Gamboa on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, cost $125 for a foreign adult, and are for ages 12 and up (checked October 2026). The island is home to 110 kinds of mammal and 335 of bird.
People with limited mobility, people with animal allergies, and anyone travelling with an animal, assistance animals included. No animal may come along because the monkeys are territorial and can turn on a pet.
