Panama Canal Wildlife Tour or Locks Tour?

Panama Canal wildlife tour or locks tour? Sloths and monkeys on Gatun Lake, or ships in the Miraflores and Agua Clara locks. Prices, times, a day for both.

Updated October 2026

A wildlife tour and a locks tour show two different canals. The wildlife tour goes to Gamboa and out on Gatun Lake, where the ships cross the middle of the isthmus, for sloths, monkeys and crocodiles, and it never enters a lock. A locks tour goes to the Miraflores visitor center on the Pacific side, or to Agua Clara and Gatun on the Atlantic side, to watch a ship rise or fall in a lock chamber, and it has no wildlife stop. If you want animals, book the wildlife tour, from $60 a person (checked October 2026) plus a $20 fee on the day. If you want ships in the locks, book a locks tour. If you want both, one day on Viator does both.

The wildlife tour

Monkey Sightseeing Panama’s tour starts with a safari truck on the roads of Soberania National Park looking for sloths, toucans and crocodiles, then takes a boat down the Chagres River onto Gatun Lake to the monkey islands, with large ships passing on the canal, and ends with a short forest walk. You see the canal as a working waterway from a small boat, which is a sight of its own, but not its engineering: there are no lock chambers and no visitor center. The animals guide covers what lives there.

Illustration. The wildlife tour sees the canal from the water: the ships pass, the monkeys stay in the trees.

The locks

Miraflores, the Pacific locks closest to Panama City, has the canal’s main visitor center, open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with the ticket office open until 5:00 pm. A non-resident adult pays B/.17.22 and a child aged 6 to 12 B/.7.22, film included (the balboa is on par with the US dollar; checked October 2026). The Panama Canal Authority is modernising the center with works running to the end of 2026, and warns of longer waits at 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Conozca Panamá Primero Tours & Transfers’ half day pairs Miraflores with the old Canal Zone, Amador and a walk in Casco Viejo; the visitor-center ticket is included only if you pick the canal-ticket option.

Agua Clara, on the Atlantic side about an hour’s drive from the city, overlooks the locks of the 2016 expansion and Gatun Lake; its ticket also covers the Gatun Locks viewpoint. It opens daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, with tickets sold until 3:30 pm, at B/.10 for a non-resident adult and B/.5 for a child (checked October 2026). R&E Transfer Panama’s day on the Atlantic side takes in Agua Clara, the Atlantic Bridge and the Gatun Locks.

The day that does both

Panama Day Trips’ Ocean to Ocean day puts a boat safari on the canal and Gatun Lake, past ships and the wildlife on the shores, together with the Agua Clara and Gatun Locks on foot. It runs six to eight hours from Panama City, from $85 a person (checked October 2026), with the boat and entry fees included and lunch not. The boat does not go through a lock, and it is not a dedicated wildlife trip: no safari truck, no forest walk.
