Pipeline Road Birding
Birding on Pipeline Road in Soberania National Park: toucans and trogons, opening hours, the Rainforest Discovery Center tower and guided birding days.
Pipeline Road, the Camino del Oleoducto, is a dirt road that runs north from Gamboa deep into the forest of Soberania National Park. The environment ministry calls it one of the most important birdwatching spots in the Americas, says more than 300 species can be seen on it in 24 hours, and keeps it open on foot only, from 6:30 am to 4:00 pm. Keel-billed toucans, collared aracaris, trogons, motmots and manakins are among the birds people come for. A guide who knows the calls finds far more than you will alone: Panamanian Aventures’ birding day is from $145 a person (checked October 2026), with private transport from Panama City.
The road

| Pipeline Road | |
|---|---|
| Where | Starts at Gamboa, by the Chagres River and Gatun Lake, about 45 minutes’ drive from Panama City |
| Park | Soberania National Park, protected since 1980, about 19,500 hectares |
| Open | On foot only, 6:30 am to 4:00 pm; no cars, motorbikes or mountain bikes |
| Visitors | More than 9,500 a year |
| Birds | More than 300 species can be seen in 24 hours |
Hours and figures from Panama’s environment ministry, checked October 2026.
The forest along the road is mature lowland rainforest, and the birding works the way it does everywhere in the tropics: the guide hears a call, waits, and finds the bird in the scope. The road opens at 6:30 am, and the earlier you are on it, the cooler the walk.
The birds people come for
| Bird | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Keel-billed toucan | Black, with a yellow chest and a huge green, orange and red bill |
| Yellow-throated (chestnut-mandibled) toucan | Larger, with a two-toned bill, yellow above and chestnut below |
| Collared aracari | A small toucan with a red band across a yellow belly |
| Trogons and motmots | Trogons sit still on mid-level branches; motmots swing their racket-tipped tails like a pendulum |
| Antbirds and manakins | Small birds of the understorey, found by their calls |
All three toucans are marked as common on the Rainforest Discovery Center’s bird list for the road. In the same forest you may meet howler monkeys, coatis and agoutis; the animals guide has those.

The Rainforest Discovery Center
Near the start of the road, the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center, run by the Eugene Eisenmann Avifauna Foundation, has an observation tower whose top deck stands 32 metres up, just above the forest canopy, reached by 174 steps. It opens every day from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the ticket office closing at 4:00 pm, and a foreign visitor pays $30 (checked October 2026). Visits are self-guided. Guided Bird Tours sells a Pipeline Road birding morning with the tower as an option.
